The Indiana Counseling Association (INCA) was founded in December 1960 through the initiative of a faculty member at the University of Notre Dame. Originally organized under a name associated with personnel and human resources, the Association was created to support the growing professional identity of counselors in Indiana.
In February 1967, INCA was formally incorporated as a nonprofit organization in the State of Indiana. Three years later, in 1970, INCA became an official state branch of the American Counseling Association (ACA), strengthening its role as a professional and advocacy organization aligned with national standards and ethics.
Over the decades, INCA has evolved alongside the counseling profession itself. As counseling expanded into clinical mental health, school counseling, addictions, marriage and family therapy, counselor education, and related specialties, INCA grew to represent counselors across practice settings and career stages.
The Association has remained committed to:
Upholding ethical standards established by the American Counseling Association
Supporting professional counselors through education, advocacy, and leadership
Responding to changes in legislation, licensure, and mental health needs across Indiana
INCA’s work is guided by an all-volunteer Board of Directors, committee chairs, and professional interest group leaders from across the state. This structure ensures that the Association remains grounded in the lived realities of counselors practicing, teaching, and training in Indiana.
Volunteer leadership has been central to INCA’s longevity and impact, allowing the organization to remain responsive, collaborative, and member-driven.
Today, the Indiana Counseling Association continues to serve as a trusted advocate and professional home for counselors throughout Indiana. Through continuing education, legislative advocacy, professional development programs, and community partnerships, ICA remains focused on strengthening the profession and supporting those who serve others.
As the counseling field continues to evolve, INCA remains committed to honoring its history while actively shaping the future of counseling in Indiana.
